Yeah I'd like 3 A1200s and a A4000 delivered to my house please
ohhh and a Triumph TR7 whilst your at it (I mean no-ones making them
anymore are they ? so no new developments then).
You have a basic working version of the program, the author says "give
me some money if you want to keep using it" theres your motivation.
Actually, I'm just wondering here, but what does anyone want from MUI
4 ? I mean in my case I installed 3.8 (and registered it :) ) and
forgot about it, some of my software uses it, some of it doesn't and
to be honest I can't actually remember off-hand which is which. I
generally consider the registration price to be part of the cost of
the software that uses it, the programmers knew exactly what the
situation with MUI was before they used it didn't they.

Maybe because there's only so much you can write about a web browser?
I've just finished reading the Voyager review; and it told me
everything i'd want to know about Voyager.
PageStream is easily worthy of 4 pages. More, even. It's effing
brilliant (it will be better in the finished version when the pdf
export works :)). The Documentation with the current (pre) release =
is for v3.3. v4 will have a nice new printed manual and stuff.

I sent it off earlier today (Wednesday) and decided it'd be a waste of
postage to just send the box on it's own, so I stuck an Amiga CD in
there as well. You'll have to wait to see what, but it's nowt special,
just something I've already got that turned up as part of a Weird
Science bundle last year ;)

Eddie (I've added a couple more prizes to my `spending frenzy' friday
draw as well. See seperate mail)

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi all,
With two days officially left I figured I'd add a few more items to my
prize draw on Friday night. I came across the original Virtual Karting
in a box of discounted goodies I picked up a while back. It's hardly a
great game, but it's going into the draw as I already have it. Then
there's the platform game Ruffian. "Actually... a bloody good game"
said CU Amigas Matt Broughton on the packaging. Well, maybe a few
years back it was. At least it didn't seem bothered running on my
Blizzard 060 which is good. The funny thing is, I didn't even know I
had this game. When Epic sent me my analogue steering wheel they used
three Ruffian boxes to pad the box out. I thought they were empty
games boxes until I opened one of them a couple of weeks back !
So the prize draw that I'm doing this Friday night (after the pub)
will win someone the following :-
One Amiga mouse (with logo)
Camcontrol software (and manual)
One Star Wars Imperial Stormtrooper keyring (makes authentic sounds)
Virtual Karting
Ruffian
I think I've got the names of most people who said they'd bought / be
buying something this week. Anyone who's not spoken up, or is
worried they might have been missed out, then send me an email direct
stating just one thing you've bought during the spending frenzy and
from where, and I'll chuck your name in the hat (the BIG hat).
For everyone else who's totally bemused by the whole thing... don't
panic, it'll be over by the weekend (then I'll go back into lurk mode)
Cheers,
Eddie (right, let's see if there's anything else I can chuck out...
erm... ahem, I mean `give away' ;))

Yeah I agree, but unfortunately that's not the way they chose to do it.
And I'm grateful for those programmers who did choose to use MUI,
imho it makes everything look so much nicer, and the configurability it
gives you over your applications is what AmigaOS should be about.

I think the trouble here is that you have *some* knowledge of the
physics, and assume you have *all* the knowledge. Light can travel at
the speed it does, because photons are massless, so they aren't
subject to the same rules as you would be, for instance.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "anything travelling at the speed
of light slows down", though.

Or get one from Blittersoft, which doesn't require the software patch.
That's if they're still selling them, they don't display them on their
website and they don't advertise in AF anymore.

You don't know there won't be a new version. You don't know that your
registration fee wouldn't be the one to make him decide it's worth
developing the system further. As to why you would consider paying, if
you're using it, you should pay for it, same as any other software.

Just a slightly related spin on this; but the patch that power's HD
drives use is called in the startup-sequence; and Micronik's drives
require no patch. This must mean that you cannot boot a 1.76Mb HD
Amiga floppy; which is not a problem for me; only if I wish to fire up
a game or something which is not often at all. :) Unless of course
Power's patch makes it resident in one of the Amiga's boot vectors (is
that what it is? :) and the patch is resident until it's flushed from
memory?
Anyway - for me I don't need Amiga disk booting on 1760K disks. :)
One related question; the PC0 DOS Driver (and PC1, PC2....) is set up
for a DD PC disk; what do I need to change in the mountlist to get it
to recognise both PC 720K and 1440K? I'm not sure if it's the tracks
or sectors that increases (/me suspects both); I know surfaces stays 2
doesn't it? Or do I have to make a mountlist one for 720K and one for
1440K.
Also; The Power XL HD drive; if that's mounted via the Amiga's external
disk drive port; it's mounted as DF1:, yes? Or is it another name?
Like umm, dunno really! :) I'll have to get the drive in my tower
though, which was easy enough with my other DD external drive... :)
All the best,
Nick.

Hi ppl,
I recieved my new external Scanmagic scandoubler and flicker-fixer
yesterday, to be used with my new Belinea 17" monitor. However, I've
noticed some strange occurences. Before I go screaming to technical
support, I thought someone here might have a quick-fix solution.
It seems as though there is quite a lot of interference around my
house, as I get strange "waves" (sorry I can't be more descriptive)
running up the screen. To combat this, I have wrapped the scandoubler
in an anti-static bag to shield it a bit. Any ideas?
Thanks for any assistance,
Paul Laycock

Hi ppl,
OS3.5 was going so nicely over the past couple of months that I thought
nothing would go wrong. But now, for no apparent reason, my Amiga hangs
when quit Screenmode. I haven't installed anything new, so what could
be the problem?
On a possibly similar note, QuakeWorldWOS (and QuakeWOS) won't open a
screen anymore thus failing to run. It used to work fine, when all of a
sudden, "unable to open AGA screen". Whats going on?!

The PowerC patch merely lets you write to disks - you can read (and boot
from) HD disks without the patch ...

Nope. It's clever enough to recognise a HD disk when it sees one, and will
read this fine! I found out that it also works fine as it is for 360k PC
disks when I had to get some data of an ex-girlfriends' mums very ancient
PC ...

An external drive is DF1, yes. You can get an internal one though, if they
still have them ...

This would make less difference than people imagine. The general purpose
integer instruction set does not differ much between the 68020 and 68060.
Most compilers produce nearly identical code when compiling (non-FPU code)
for either processor. I don't think any Amiga compiler is smart enough to
optimize properly for the 040/060.

Hi,
This is from Czech Amiga News:
"Oberursel, 02/09/2000: On January 26., 2000 application for insolvency was
made about the property of phase 5 digital
production, and the application proceedings has been established by a decee
made by the competent county court at the same
day. During the regular application procedure there are negotiations about
assumption, and continuation of the Amiga
technology field with among others prospective buyers. By that, continuation
of the current development and products shall
be attained, espacially as for the new G4 acceleration boards.
Every customer who did product preordering from and product prepayment to
phase5 digital products will become informed
about their objective rights in writing, once the insolvency proceeding will
be established. "

Hi riksweeney@hotmail.com,

Well it doesn't really mean anything. FWIW I've known about p5 for about
three weeks, and the major concern was what to do about folk who'd actually
stumped up the deposit and so on. While there may not be a G4 in the works,
people who did pay a deposit should get their money back... however, since
DCE paid for a licence to manufacturer some of the p5 products, they may
also pay a small sum to be able to finalise the G4 boards that p5 *was*
developing...

The latest theory is that if he was born, it'd be 7BC, cos that's when
there was a significant event in the night sky that could correlate to
something the wise men would have seen as happening over Bethlehem ...

Interesting. Well that's good to know. :) I suppose the patch has
something to do with the buffers on PowerC's drives; so that data is
written at the correct speed?

Excellent! :) In fact on an off-note; the A4K floppy drive I had
sometimes said when I put a disk in to try (before I knew it wouldn't
work) and format it as MS-DOS type; it stated a HD disk was 360K; a DD

Urghh .... I dunno! IIRC it just patches something in OS about writing to
HD disks ...

Actually, on an A4000, there is a jumper on the m/b which sets whether DF1:
is internal or external. So if it's a normal A4000 drive you could have it
as DF1 internally, but if it's one that plugs into the floppy port like on
the back of an A1200 then it'll either be DF1: or DF2: depending upon the
jumper ...

Well, most of them are stolen, like most people's, but I try not to have any

I know there was a bug in Kickstart 37.175 (2.04) regarding HD floppy
detection; but I don`t know; does anyone know what the patch does
regarding writing HD disks? :)

Since the A1200 can't have Df1: on the internal floppy header I guess
running DF1: from the internal header is no go. :)

But if the second disk does have an RDB (a different one) it will be
mounted as a different device, with a different name. If the names
clash, a number is appended to the second one.

That's not what http://www.amiga-news.de/archiv/0037.shtml says.
However, Ralph Schmidt has stated "The last Phase5's Amiga products are
and will be continued by DCE".
What happens to the G4 cards depends on how advanced the development was
and whether anyone wants to pick up on it.

Because you use it. you pay for the version you use, not any potential

Ben, do you think that someone who has pre-ordered a G4 & SCSI card
should sit tight or try and find a used PPC card for an A1200 pronto.
If, as I have, they've pre-ordered Fusion PPC, sourcing a PPC card is
quite important.

I would hang fire for a while at least. FusionPPC still isn't quite ready
(problems with a bug in WarpUp according to Joe Fenton), so there's time to
see what will happen yet...

Wait a minute, it's going to be using WOS? So I have to install that to

I do hope somebody picks these up, because I was thinking of getting one and

Actually I'd prefer a 7MHz 68000 please because those 400MHz G3s are
pathetic; and they can hardly power anything. This 68000 though can
achieve Pentium 200 performance on IBeM and Pentium III 700 on PC-Task
4.2; and it out strips any Apple Mac ever; even those G4s.... :)
G3s are VERY powerful, just that G4s are Powerfuller.... :)

Hiya,
Are you running Dopus Magellan II by any chance???
Cause if so, before you change anything in WB`s screenmode you have to
turn the background off in Dopus (just hit the use button, you dont
have to save it)
Then change your sceenmode prefs then turn the background back on in
Dopus.

That's easy. They're the ones written messily, with lots of crossings-outs

What is wrong with WarpOS? I find it much cleaner than all that dodgy
ELF stuff phase5 (rest in peace) decided to use.
But then again, at least Songplayer worked with PowerUP ;)

Silly isnt it? I still have problems with my music cd icons. They
just wont play ball - see my screen grabs in this months readers
section. They stay as final writer icons for some reason. (and yes, i
do have the update installed)
Oh well.
Bifford the youngest.
P.S.
Thanks for putting mine and Ady`s screens on the CD this issue Ben.
Although, as mine was the only non-graphics card one it was kinda
overshadowed - but I still think it looks tons better than a lot of the
workbenches you`ve had on there before now. :)
And my documentation was the best there (ok, perhaps a slight overkill
but if your gonna do something, you might as well go the whole hog, eh?)
Only thing is, those screen grabs are now seriously out of date as Ive
scaled the icon bars icons down somewhat and played with MUI. time to
re-send some new screengrabs me thinks.
P.P.S. Might have a "demo" style animation to send in soon - only 10
seconds long, but its taken a day and a half to render the 150 frame in
C4D. !!!!!!
Yawn.
Thats me done.

That's true of some, but by no means all, shareware authors. Many
software packages are easily registered online, such as Miami, THOR, the
Vapor range, AK products. Many more would be if more shareware authors
made use of the existing systems available for online credit card
transactions, such as RegNet.
However, none of this applies to commercial software bought through
normal retail channels, if it hasn't been pirated first.

I'd send a few pics of my Workbench in, but I feel that, as you say,
they would be overshadowed. It looks all right though, even if I have

I've been working on a massive (believe me when I say massive: roughly
fifty separate animations, comprised of about a hundred frames each!)
space battle anim in C4D for ages, but I never really have the time to
work on it properly.

Yea gods! That was 8 days ago! Anyway, the guy who originally wrote the
mail, was trying to make the emergency boot disk for OS3.5, but OS3.5's
instaler script is hard coded to DF0: with the assumption that everyone is
going to have a DF0: - but he didn't, it was broken I think...or summit.

It's about the fact that phase5 filed for bankruptcy on 26-1-2000. Hence

V3 looks awful on AGA, out of the box. A bit of fiddling under the "Images"
section of the Prefs fixes that tho, mine are as follows:
Dithering = Floyd-Steinberg
Color Quantization = Two Pass
DCT Processing = Floating point
Takes a bit longer than normal to load most images, but they look far better
than they do when you first load it up...

The problem is that a lot of people don't have credit cards (myself
included, and the reason why I still haven't registered Miami; noone in the
UK seems to sell it anymore) and a lot of people aren't very happy about
sending cash in the post.

Hey nice evasion of the original point ;-)
and yes they are underpowered compared to G4's (I've got a 350Mhz G3 imac and a
400Mhz G4 Powermac on my desk at the mo and the speed difference is quite a bit
- by observation only you understand). Plus there was the lack of Scsi on the
Amijoes. There was also a complete lack of ;-) which were missed in the hurry
to send the e-mail ;-).

Blimey, I said to leave this thread alone and we've had, what? Five? ten?
emails about it since. Stop it now!

Hey
I am sometimes getting software failures on bootup on my amiga. I have
a 1d4 revision motherboard with 8mb of ram. There is a quantum fireball
harddisk connected by the4 new elbox ide 4way buffered ide interface.
Sometimes i connect a 8x cdrom to the ide interface but most of the
time i leave it disconnected because the power supply i have isn't
powerful enough to support the harddisk and cdrom drive at the same
time. That isn't the problem though, its that when i boot up without
the cdrom I get the error message saying
'An atapi device has been detected at unit 3 but does not semm to be
fuctioning properly'
Sometimes when i boot up before that message comes up there is a
software failure, sometimes ther is an error when i click on the 'ok'
button on the message and sometimes the message doesn't appear at all
and the computer freezes. If you know the problem or how to sort it out
please reply
Thanks
Peter

The Kylwalda lets you use a bog-standard PC High-density floppy drive as a
direct replacement for an actual Amiga-compatible floppy drive - but it only
works as a DD drive, so you will only be able to use disks as DD 880K ones
alas.
I really wish someone would some up with a Kylwalda-like interface that
gives us HD capability using PC HD floppy drives. I'm certain that enough
demand exists and the Power XL drive is proof that it can be done! Even
bringing that interface back into production would be a good move!

If you read Simon's review of the Kylwalda, you'll see that it can be used
in conjunction with the Catweasel to give you a booting High Density Amiga
floppy drive.

You shouldn't have to. Just replace the "fastfilesystem" on the RDB from
within HD Toolbox.
